Sikh martial arts

Shashtar Vidiya is known as the Sikh martial art. It is the education and training of fighting with weapons such as swords. It is the order of Tenth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji that all Sikhs must learn and practice this art. Gatka is the demonstration of this art. Our classes are run by Baba Fateh Singh Gatka Akhara; a highly experienced and established Gatka School with regular classes taking place all over London. The Akhara already ran a class in Woolwich and with their help we were able to start the first ever Gatka class in Erith.

The instructors are also qualified in various other martial arts allowing us to incorporate street self- defence into our Erith classes. Gatka has helped our local children gain confidence, fitness, discipline and teamworking skills. In the first ever competition they have competed in, our class won the boys 12-14 category in The 2022 UK National Gatka Championships. It has been so rewarding to see our local kids growing in confidence, character and Sikhi. We look forward to see what Guru Sahib and the future bring for this class.
